Alice Bauer Q - The Way I Am
Alice Bauer Q presents the album The Way I Am—the first record released by singer and composer Alice Bauer under her own name and featuring largely her own original compositions. The album combines jazz influenced by the melodic traditions of the Middle East and folk music. Jazz is her natural home, but she has never allowed herself to be confined by it: she subtly weaves modal elements from Turkish and Persian music into her compositions, along with echoes of Moravian folk melodies. The result is an original interpretation rooted in her many years of experience across a wide range of musical worlds explored through her other projects, including the vocal group Skety, the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, Hot Sisters, the experimental modal project Nebula, and others.
On stage, she will be accompanied by three musicians who are also among the leading figures on the Czech jazz scene: pianist Jakub Tököly, double bassist Tomáš Liška—this year’s Anděl Award winner and, together with Alice, a member of the Anděl-nominated HlasKontrabas Oktet—and drummer Marek Urbánek. Guests who played on the album will also join the album launch. The arrangements for winds and strings were written by saxophonist Andy Schofield, artistic director of the Jazz Dock Orchestra, so the compositions will be performed in the same instrumentation heard on the record. The performers will include Andy Schofield on alto saxophone, Suzanne Higgins on tenor saxophone, Petr Kalfus on tenor saxophone, and the Epoque Quartet.
