"Is it folk, pop, rock, jazz? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. The main thing is the strength and the quality of the songs."

Jindřich Göth, music publicist, iDnes.cz

“Although the songs emphasize unconventional music, inventive arrangements and technically brilliant singing, the lyrics of the singer-songwriter, worthy of that label, are not crossword puzzles, but about something important.”

Tomáš S. Polívka, Magazín Uni

Indie-Jazz-Pop Fusion Band called MarZ - the musical universe of singer, guitarist and songwriter Markéta Zdeňková. Her songs orbit themes ranging from confessional to lighthearted, cerebral to shamanic. She writes mostly in Czech and has a real talent for beautiful melodies that remain true to the cadence of her native language. This has enabled her to find a growing audience that crosses styles and generations.

Next to Markéta, at the core of MarZ is co-founder Štěpán Janoušek (trombone/backing vocals/ arrangements), a standout virtuoso on Prague’s new wave of young jazz instrumentalists in his own right. His signature brilliance comes through in the band’s dazzling arrangements Their first album, Na rozcestí (Amplión Records, 2017) was a beautiful introduction to the unique MarZ sounds- cape. In 2018 the duo expanded to a quintet, bringing in Dalibor Hrubeš (guitar, lap steel), Miloš Klápště (bass guitar, synth) and Vítězslav Patočka (drums). This formation really bolstered the new songs that Markéta was writing, and took MarZ to another dimension. In March 2020, they released their eponymous album on Tranzistor Records recorded in SONO Records, one of the top studios in the Czech Republic. The third album #silnouzenou was just released in September 2024 and has received good reviews in the media and from listeners.
